About the lab

Capability, built by doing

PULSE.AI Lab is the applied AI lab at Stevens Institute of Technology, part of the College of Professional Education.

An applied AI lab where students learn by building what Stevens uses.

PULSE.AI Lab builds AI capability across Stevens and grows the people who carry it forward. We take real problems from industry partners, faculty researchers and the teams who run the college, and turn them into working products, optimized workflows and new creative AI solutions.

Students do the work alongside faculty and practitioners. They ship to real users, meet real standards and leave with experience employers can see. Each semester a new cohort joins and inherits working systems, which keeps the talent pipeline full and the work moving.

What P.U.L.S.E. stands for

Fig. 1Letters drawn with signal lines

  • Product

Something people choose to use, with an owner and a roadmap.

  • User experience

Designed with the people who rely on it, and accessible from day one.

  • Learning systems

Every build teaches the team that makes it, and many teach the people who use them.

  • Engineering

Tested, measured and maintained like software that matters.

Three rules we hold every project to

  1. Rule 1

    Start with the real problem

We begin with the learner, faculty member, partner or team who feels the pain, not with a technology looking for a use.

  2. Rule 2

    Engineer the whole experience

Product, curriculum, AI, data and infrastructure are designed as one connected system.

  3. Rule 3

    Prove it before it scales

We prototype, test, measure and improve before a solution reaches more programs or people.

Everyone in the room brings something and leaves with something.

The lab is a hub, not a department. Each group gets more out than it puts in.
